WELFAIR® Animal Welfare Certification

As of May 9, 2022, the WELFAIR® 3.0 General Animal Welfare Certification Regulation was implemented and became mandatory as of September 1, 2022. Certification guidelines and self-assessment procedures are active as of January 1, 2023.

This certification confirms that specific protocols established in the European Welfare Quality and AWIN (Animal Welfare Indicators) projects have been followed and guarantees consumers that the animals associated with this seal have been raised and slaughtered under ethical and responsible conditions for animal welfare.

This certification aims to develop comprehensive systems to assess and monitor the quality of animal welfare at various stages of the production chain, including farms, slaughterhouses, industries and points of sale. It applies to species such as cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens, hens, rabbits and turkeys. This certification scheme is implemented in both Spain and Portugal and strives to ensure optimal conditions for animal welfare throughout the agri-food industry.

Organizations that have completed initial audits before January 1, 2023 will retain their previous required qualification during the first cycle, which has a duration of 3 years.
